As a local, family-owned business, we believe in the power of our small, neighborhood businesses, all of whom need our support now more than ever. We’ve been spotlighting local businesses weekly on social and in our newsletter, and this week, we’re all about women/mother-owned businesses. See below for a few near our clubs that we love!

Curio Spice: founded by Claire Cheney, the Porter Square storefront is currently closed but she still has the online shop up and running with 50% off shipping charges and free shipping with purchases over $100. Check it out and be sure to order the Mala Salt! 100% of proceeds go towards Off Their Plate, an organization partnering with restaurants to provide meals for frontline workers. For Mother’s Day, treat mom to a gift card or virtual spice class (schedule here)!

OLIVES & GRACE: a staple in the South End for unique gifts from local makers and emerging brands, owner Sofi Madison has had to shift her shop completely online amid the pandemic. She’s been in the shop long hours, daily, shipping out all of her online orders with love. Shop her curated list of gifts for Mother’s Day, gift boxes, gift cards and more!

Juicy Greens: founded by Ammy Lowney, this Jamaica Plain juice bar and cafe is all about community and family. They were set to open a second location in the West End this spring, which has been put on hold due to the pandemic, but they’re still open in Jamaica Plain for online orders and local delivery, and also offering special produce bags, groceries and wellness baskets, all great for Mother’s Day, along with a few tasty treats!

The Urban Grape: founded by Hadley Douglas and her husband, TJ, the team at this South End wine shop has worked feverishly to get their full inventory online for pick-up and delivery, so go ahead and send Mom some wine! Virtual tastings and happy hours are also being offered via Zoom (see here), as well as unique selections of wine from female winemakers and farm-to-bottle offerings.

L’Optique Boutique: founded by Carol Tijan, this Somerville shop offers unique and custom prescription eyewear and styling based on your lifestyle and optician needs. For Mother’s Day, Carol has a large selection of designer sunglasses for 30% off as well as gift cards and accessories. Healthworks members also save 10% off full-priced items with code ‘HW10.’

Drive-By Pies: founded by Fran Kolenik, this Brookline bakery and cafe has remained open amid the pandemic, offering online ordering for a limited menu of favorites, available for pick-up or delivery on Wednesday, Friday or Saturday, so there’s still time to place your orders for Mom! Also for Mother’s Day are mini take and make apple pie kits and signature ‘Ugly Cakes.’

Celeste: founded by Maria Rondeau and Juanma Calderon, this Peruvian hotspot in Somerville’s Union Square has remained open daily for take-out and delivery from 4-9pm, while also serving heroes on the frontlines. Treat mom to a gift card or delicious dinner!

Sofra, Sarma and Oleana: these incredible Cambridge/Somerville restaurants are women-led, founded and run… mothers, managers, chefs, entrepreneurs, wine directors and more. Oleana is temporarily closed due to the pandemic, but Sofra and Sarma are open for take-out and delivery with special menu offerings perfect for Mother’s Day. Cheers to the women behind these amazing spots and their recent James Beard nomination — Ana Sortum, Maura Kilpatrick, Didem Hosgel, Cassie Piuma, Liz Barwick, Arielle Singer, Paige Lombardi, Sophie Gees, Sara Fetbroth and Theresa Paopao!
