HEALTHWORKS RUNS RAGNAR!
Goals get us where we want to be. So Healthworks is setting a goal... and
what better time to set a goal than during the winter? We want to run the
Ragnar Relay New England on May 21-22.
RAGNAR RELAY NEW ENGLAND
Contemplate this: Yale and Harvard. Beantown and Yalies. You and
11 of your closest friends (or soon to be closest friends) running day and
night. Starting in the Constitution State of Connecticut, your team of 12
runners will embark on a 180 mile adventure-fest. The party in your van will
only get better as you leap frog your way up north through some of the most
scenic and historical towns this country has to offer. You'll feel the
camaraderie and team spirit as your team pushes the limits on endurance and
stamina to finish in "The City of Higher Learning," BOSTON.
EASIER THAN YOU THINK
Running three legs during a 24-hour relay race is much easier than you think.
Each team member runs three legs, ranging between 3 and 8 miles. This relay race
is physically demanding, but legs vary in difficulty, and participants can
choose which legs they run. This unique relay format makes the Ragnar Relay New
England an accessible race for beginners yet challenging enough for the most
competitive.
LOAD 'EM UP MOVE 'EM OUT
How do you get from one exchange to the next? Each team is allowed two support
vehicles. The first vehicle will drop off the first runner, drive ahead a few
miles, cheer the runner on, and provide them with water, snacks, and plenty of
love. That vehicle will then drive ahead to the first exchange point to drop off
the second runner, and pick up the first runner when that leg is complete. They
will repeat this pattern for six legs until they hand off to their second
vehicle. This leapfrogging pattern will continue all the way to the finish line.
ARE YOU IN?
We are getting some Healthworks teams together to show everyone what we are all
about but we know how many friends you have and want you to get them involved as
well. Email Matt Harrington (mh@healthworksfitness.com) if you would like to
join Team Healthworks. We have a few complimentary teams to fill up with our
Members and Staff, but there may still be some minimal costs.
Still have questions? Visit http://www.ragnarrelay.com/boston/index.php
for all of the details.
- The Run Club is currently searching for a new running leader! Course maps are still available at the fitness desk is you would like to use a convenient course map from the front door of Healthworks Back Bay. Please email Matt for more information or with any questions.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I participate if I do not belong to Healthworks Back Bay?
It doesn't matter which club you belong to, you can still attend the run club at
Back Bay. For now it will only be held at Back Bay, we will be looking into
adding our other clubs in the future.
What is the Run Club?
The run club is an informal running group designed to introduce Healthworks
members to the world of outdoors running. The club is a great way to meet other
Healthworks members, get some fresh air, and improve your fitness level. A
trainer will lead some informal stretching and give some pointers before during
and after the run. We will also have a timer at the front desk with log sheets
so that you can track your distance and time, get a prize when you reach 25, 50,
and 100 Miles! It is good to track this information so that you can check your
progress, and it is a fun way to stay motivated.
When does the Run Club Meet?
The Run Club is currently on hold until we find a new leader. Maps are still
available for your personal use at the Fitness desk at Healthworks Back Bay.
Stay tuned to HWX and the newsletters for future dates.
How do I join?
You can just show up! But we would prefer if you preregistered on Mind Body
Online under the Events Section so that we know how many people to expect. (You
can access Mind Body online from the Healthworks Home Page.)
What ability levels is the Run Club for?
The Run Club is open to all ability levels. Follow our courses at your own pace,
or meet a partner that you think would run at a similar pace. As a general rule
of thumb, you should probably be able to comfortably run 1 mile on a treadmill
before you head outside to run.
Is running outdoors safe?
Running in an urban environment can be dangerous, be sure to obey all traffic
and pedestrian signals when you are on the streets. It can be a good idea to run
with a small amount of cash ($10 or so) or a credit card, and your ID, in case
you ever get lost or injured so that you can take a cab back.
How long are the runs?
We have mapped out three courses that all start at Healthworks Back Bay, and
head to the Charles River Esplanade. They all overlap at least for a little bit.
We will provide maps at the Front Desk before you head out, but if you would
like to review before hand here are links to the courses on Google Maps:
