Right now, there are a lot of unknowns. Many situations and decisions are out of our hands and we may feel like we have no control of our day to day lives. However, we always have control over how we treat our minds and bodies. One of the most important things we can do during this time is try and keep ourselves happy and healthy.
Finding a new “normal” will ease your mind! Rather than rushing around in the morning to get to work on time, take a step back and enjoy the comfort of your home. Wake up, make a pot of coffee, sit and journal or read a new book. Take a moment to think about yourself and appreciate what you do have, rather than what you don’t.
If you’re not one to journal, read or meditate, get out and get moving! Take the normal commute time to take a stroll outside and enjoy the fresh air. Call a friend during your walk or listen to your favorite podcast. Everyone is having good and bad days, so that phone call could brighten your day as well as a loved one!
Keep your day to day routine the same. Put on those new jeans you’ve been waiting to wear and throw on some makeup. If you want to stick with the sweatpants then do that, but maybe blow out your hair. Keep yourself feeling good by looking good! Let’s be honest, when we look good, we feel good! It may seem unnecessary for you to do these things to just sit at home, but you will feel amazing about yourself and it will boost your motivation to crush the day.
If you are someone currently working from home, create a workspace for yourself. Many people do not have “office space” in their homes and working from the couch or your bed does not give you that extra boost of energy you need to get through the day. Find a space, whether it be your kitchen table, dining room table or a space in your basement, where you can work efficiently. Organize your work items in this space and make it your own. When it is time for lunch, dinner or time to relax, go to another area in your house.
During tough times, it is so important to be honest with ourselves. Think about how you are truly feeling and be okay with it. You may not feel like a go-getter every day and some days you may feel sad. Know that it is okay to experience a wide variety of emotions. Speak kindly to yourself and know that the tough times will pass.
The news and social media can be overwhelming and mentally draining. Put the phones down! Disconnect from the web world and live in the present. Social media can be a soul crusher. It leads you to believe that people are living this perfect life and doing so much more then you. Without realizing it, you are constantly comparing yourself to others, which is toxic. Please take a step back and remember that social media does not tell the whole story. Just because others may be taking this time to “learn more” or “do more” does not mean you need to be doing the same. Move at your own pace and do the things that make you happy. Limit your scrolling on the web to 1-2x a day for a short period of time.
Prioritizing sleep will assist with brain function, digestion and your overall well-being. At the end of the night, take the time to decompress. Clear your mind of any negative thoughts or feelings that the day may have brought. Write down some positive thoughts and actions you can implement for the next day.
