Do it for yourself! Fitness far surpasses physical modification; self-reflection, self-awareness, honesty, and accountability to yourself are the keys to success and fulfillment. Remember your goals, and push yourself to get there when no one is watching. Fitness journeys are challenging both mentally and physically; you must exercise patience, but you are capable!

PERSONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Though an athlete for much of her life, Nichell began to educate herself about fitness, including exercise and nutrition, in her mid-twenties. Through developing positive and healthy habits mentally and physically, she eventually experienced a 55+ pound weight loss that she continues to maintain. Continuing along said journey, the next step included studying for and eventually obtaining a personal training certification. She hopes to continue to gain expertise in many other areas of fitness and grow as a trainer.

JOANNE S

Personal Trainer

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS
BS – Business & Marketing University of Mass. – Amherst
ACE-CPT, TRX Suspension
NASM Pre/Post Natal, Functional Movement Screen (FMS)
Boxing, Special Populations, Exercise & Aging (SPECIAL TRAININGS)

AREAS OF EXPERTISE
I work with all ages and fitness levels, but specialize in getting and keeping the aging body fit, healthy and balanced. Boxing is also a passion of mine and I love how empowered women feel after throwing their first punch.

TRAINING PHILOSOPHY
Work hard, play hard, laugh hard. I experienced a mid-life awakening and discovered that it’s never too late to get trim and fit and be my personal best, and that’s true for us all. I prescribe a fun and varied routine based on each client’s personal goals, needs and preferences. My job is to discover what those needs and desires are – even if they seem impossible – and lead them towards those goals with enough push to make their workouts challenging, but still fun. Healthy aging is among the most important goals that everyone should reach for and I work to help my clients achieve that, even if they have injuries, pain and illness to work through.

PERSONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
I’ve lost 50 pounds and kept it off for over 9 years, having incorporated a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, into my daily routine. I ran the Rukus obstacle course race in 2011 and came in first in my age group, which thrilled me. I also spent the last year living on the Big Island of Hawaii – a paradise and lifelong dream of mine, but I’m so happy to be back at Healthworks.

There are always new ways to challenge your body and it is important to have variety in your workouts to keep your body guessing and prevent yourself from getting bored or hitting a plateau. I am a strong believer in hard work, determination and that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to.

MPH – Environmental Health, University of California at Berkeley
ACE – CPT; NASM – Performance Enhancement Specialist; Concept 2 ERG Indoor Rowing Instructor; CPR/AED; Drop10; Pre/Post Natal; BURN; Kettlebell; TRX; Bootcamp

Areas of expertise:
Lifestyle changes – Transitions to healthy changes will become our priority. I love building stronger bodies for weight loss, combining strength and cardio workouts to get losses of 5 to 25 to 100lbs.
I also help my clients optimize their run training and bike as well as swim performance for a variety of running and triathlon races.

_
Training Philosophy:
We all need strong hearts and bodies to enjoy living out our goals in health and happiness. Many enjoy racing, and yet I completely understand someone who just wants overall fitness and never races a day in her life. Sometimes the best accomplishment is just in making the workout habit stick! Having fun workouts with positive encouragement makes it easier.

_
Personal Accomplishments:
I love being outdoors and I’ve biked over 130 miles from Boston to Provincetown in one day, just for fun, with friends. I enjoy running races (5K, 10K+) and triathalon races; sometimes I marathon for races like Miami 2008 and Boston 2010. The longest races I do are the half-Ironman Triathalons and Vermont’s Tough Mudder (twice!).
