Even if you’re one of those people for whom the phrase “rise and shine” makes you want to cringe, it’s totally possible to start being a little more merry in the mornings (yes, even tomorrow morning).

And there’s good reason to try:

We’ve all experienced what it’s like to wake up excited, refreshed, and looking forward to the day ahead of us, which likely turns out pretty awesome. Things seem to go our way, people seem to be friendlier…it’s strange.

But it’s not surprising.

Why?

Because our thoughts, words, and feelings shape our reality, even (especially) as the alarm goes.

So, why not consciously make yourself a morning person, and get yourself started off on the right side of bed more often?

Try These 7 Morning Habits to Increase Positivity:

1. Make your bed.

This simple task helps you feel focused, orderly, and disciplined. Remember, if it’s easy to do, it’s easy not to do as well—so consider it a small win every time you puff those pillows.

2. Smile as soon as possible.

If you’re laughing before you even walk out of your bedroom, chances are good that positive vibe will follow you well past your first cup of coffee.

Here’s our tip:

Sit up on the edge of the bed, put your hands over your head (“V” for victory), and say in the goofiest voice you can muster: “What a beautiful day to be alive!”

Seriously: try not to laugh at yourself.

3. Ground yourself with gratitude.

Within a few minutes of waking up, spend some time reflecting on 2-3 things you can be grateful for. You may want to write them down, or simply close your eyes and focus on them as you sit with your hand over your heart.

4. Wake up with Warrior Two.

A five-minute yoga flow is a perfect way to loosen up your body, get the blood and oxygen flowing, and instantly feel more energized.

5. Listen to something inspiring.

Instead of heading for the news or latest social media updates, why not listen to an inspiring podcast or some of your favorite upbeat music instead?

6. Strike a pose.

Research shows that using body language which conveys empowerment and confidence can actually make you feel empowered and confident. So, while brushing your teeth, stand in a confident poise (think hand on hip à la Wonder Woman).

7. Clean up your nighttime habits.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention how important it is to make a better p.m. if you want to have a better a.m. So: go to bed at the same time, avoid overly stimulating media after dinner, minimize alcohol consumption, and sleep in a pitch dark room.
