Are You Supermarket Savvy?

Between temptations at work, dinner at a girlfriend’s, or that corner store we pass on the way home with the BEST candy, it can be all too easy to give in to temptation. Because of this, we need to work extra hard to make sure that our homes are filled with healthy snacks and limited higher calorie, low nutrient-dense options. We have to say “no” all day outside of the house, but home should be the “safe” spot for food and eating!

Here are some tips and tricks for supermarket shopping to help you stay on track:

1. Make it fun!

If you don’t love the market closest to your house, walk or drive a little farther to another market. Make a playlist and dance through the aisles, go with a friend, or make it part of another errand you do enjoy (e.g. post-manicure!).

If you have a recipe you are truly excited to eat, going to get the ingredients doesn’t seem so bad. Make sure to have an idea of what you want ahead of time and make a list.

3. Ingredients First!

Instead of solely focusing on the nutrition label and breakdown of macronutrients, focus more on the list of ingredients. What are they? Can you pronounce them? Are they man-made or artificial? Focus on the clean eating.

4. Do Not go Shopping Hungry.

Don’t do it! If you are hungry, grab a sparkling water to sip on the second you get inside the store.

5. Fridge Vs. Cupboard

When you get home from the market, take a look at how many items are going into the fridge v. the cupboard. Remember: fresh fruits, veggies, seafood, and whole grains are on the outside aisles. Most junk foods are in the middle aisles or on the lower shelves (eye level with kids!).

6. Always Take on a New Challenge

Lastly, challenge yourselves to always take the next step towards a “cleaner diet.” If there is a food item you are enjoying on a daily basis that is considered more processed, consider making it yourself at home.

Let’s make sure your fridge is full of the good food. If you have it, you will eat it!
